PETALUMA, Calif. – The friend of one of seven fishermen missing since their boat capsized in the Gulf of California is seeking to raise money for a private dive team to search the undersea wreckage.
Lorie Goldbeck told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa on Monday that she and others are raising money while pressuring the U.S. Coast Guard to conduct a dive.
Goldbeck is a friend of 49-year-old Shawn Chaddock of Petaluma, one of seven Northern California men unaccounted for since the 105-foot vessel sank suddenly in a storm July 3.
The Coast Guard and Mexican navy suspended their search last week after covering more than 7,000 square miles off the Baja California coast.
Mexican authorities said uncertainty about the capsized boat's location stymied divers who looked for the wreck without success.
